What Goes Into a Business Carbon Footprint?

A business carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by your company's activities. This includes direct emissions from operations, indirect emissions from energy use, and value chain emissions from everything you buy and sell.

The GHG Protocol, the international standard for carbon accounting, organises these into three scopes. Scope 1 is direct emissions. Scope 2 is purchased energy. Scope 3 is everything else in your value chain, and typically represents the largest share.

Measuring your footprint involves collecting activity data (energy bills, fuel purchases, travel records, procurement spend), applying emission factors to convert that data into CO2 equivalent, and presenting the results in a structured report.
