What is SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative)?
A partnership between CDP, UN Global Compact, WRI, and WWF that helps companies set emission reduction targets aligned with climate science. SBTi validates corporate net zero commitments and science-based targets.
Why it matters
SBTi validation gives targets external credibility. Committing to SBTi also requires Scope 3 measurement for companies where value chain emissions exceed 40% of total, which drives demand for carbon data from suppliers throughout the chain.
Example
A SaaS company with 200 employees commits to SBTi's SME route, setting near-term targets to halve Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. The streamlined process takes six weeks from application to validation.
