What is REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin)?

UK certificates that prove electricity was generated from renewable sources. REGOs enable organisations to claim renewable electricity consumption and reduce their Scope 2 emissions using the market-based method.

    Why it matters

REGOs are the mechanism behind renewable energy tariff claims in the UK. Without REGO-backed evidence, a business cannot credibly claim zero-emission electricity in its carbon report. Understanding how REGOs work helps avoid overstating renewable energy benefits.

    Example

An energy supplier provides REGO certificates covering 100% of a client's 200,000 kWh annual consumption. The client uses these certificates to report zero market-based Scope 2 emissions in its carbon report.
