What is ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme)?
A mandatory UK energy assessment scheme for large organisations. ESOS requires qualifying businesses to conduct audits of their energy use every four years and identify cost-effective energy efficiency measures.
Why it matters
ESOS Phase 3 expanded requirements to include action plans for identified savings. Non-compliance carries financial penalties. The energy data gathered for ESOS can also be repurposed for carbon reporting, making the two processes complementary.
Example
A retail chain qualifying for ESOS audits its 45 stores and identifies £280,000 in annual energy savings from LED lighting upgrades and HVAC optimisation. The same data feeds directly into its annual carbon report.
