    Offsets and Removal

    What is Carbon Removal?

The process of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it permanently. Carbon removal methods include afforestation, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air capture, and enhanced weathering.

    Why it matters

True net zero requires addressing residual emissions through removal rather than avoidance offsets. As the distinction between removal and avoidance becomes clearer in reporting standards, businesses will need to understand which mechanisms qualify.

    Example

A professional services firm purchases 20 tonnes of biochar-based carbon removal credits at £180 per tonne to cover residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through operational changes.
