When running a business, it’s important you make sure it’s as sustainable as possible. Sustainability is so important no matter if you are a business or a consumer - the more sustainable the better you are and the reduced overall damage that will be done to the planet.

Being sustainable can be making small changes, which over time do make a difference or making big drastic changes which have an instant impact. Deciding to walk to work instead of drive, would be an example of a change or using eco friendly packaging for food at your restaurant - which is something every food and drink company should at least try and do.

To help get you started, below we have put together a quick guide on three tips for making your business more sustainable. Keep on reading to learn more and start making some changes which will benefit the planet.

    Reduce Energy Consumption

One of the easiest ways to make your business more sustainable is by reducing energy usage. Simple changes such as switching to LED lighting (or smart lights), turning off equipment when it’s not being used, and using energy-efficient appliances can significantly lower your energy consumption. These are all changes that a lot of businesses can do and may have not thought of doing. Plus, some of the changes are really useful, like using smart lights.

    Rethink Packaging

When was the last time you spent time reviewing your packaging? Could you make some changes which make it more sustainable? At first thought you may say no, but in a lot of cases, there are changes you can make which will make a difference to the environment. For example, reducing unnecessary packaging and switching to recyclable or biodegradable materials can make a big difference. If you know of any other businesses that are similar to you, you could reach out and see if they have a method of packing which is good for the environment which you could use as inspiration - it’s the planet that benefits if you are all sharing good practices.

    Minimise Waste

Reducing waste should be a key focus for any sustainable business strategy. Make sure you do a review on your waste, and see if there are improvements that you can make. With technology changing rapidly, there may be a way to use tech to help make the process of minimising waste a lot easier for you. Implement recycling programmes, donate unused materials where possible, and explore ways to reuse or repurpose resources. There are always changes you can make to help be more sustainable.

What changes are you going to be making for your business and in your personal life that you think will help the planet? Do you consider yourself as someone who prioritises sustainability and if so, what do you think makes the biggest impact? Is there anything missing in our guide that you think we should be adding?
